Young Researchers

The Van Raalte Institute invites applications from college graduates who have not yet entered graduate school to join its Young Researchers program.

The Young Researchers program provides grants of $4,000 for a one-semester research opportunity (renewable once) for college graduates who are looking toward post-graduate studies but have either not yet applied or not yet entered into an academic program. (Graduate students should consider Visiting Research Fellows grants.)

Young Researchers are provided resources and space in which to work at the Theil-Nyenhuis Research Center, home of the Van Raalte Institute, along with support and mentoring.

Young Researchers would be expected to work on a project that is within the focus of the Van Raalte Institute, though they would not necessarily be required to complete the project within their fellowship period.

Given the financial award and the length of the granting period, Young Researchers would be expected to devote part of their working time on the project with regular hours at the Research Center, though other jobs could be held.

Those interested in applying should submit a CV and research proposal to vanraalte@hope.edu.

Research proposals should:

  • Fit the mission of the VRI
  • Further the studies of the researcher
  • Utilize the resources of the VRI and Â鶹¹ú²ú Archives and Special Collections

If a grant is awarded, the Young Researcher will:

  • Set a regular schedule to be in the office
  • Work on the proposed project
  • Present periodic updates to VRI Senior Research Fellows
  • If completed, formally present the project at a lecture open to the public

The Van Raalte Institute will:

  • Pay $4,000 for a semester (four months) of research
  • Provide office space at the Theil-Nyenhuis Research Center
  • Provide support in research and writing for both the project and graduate school applications
  • Organize any public lecture
  • Entertain possibilities of printing/posting the project

This is a rolling program, and there are no set deadlines for applicants. Each will be considered upon reception.

Questions about the program may be sent to vanraalte@hope.edu.
