State of Michigan Support for Future Educators

One program is a fellowship that begins when you are admitted to a Teacher Education Preparation Program, and another is a stipend available to student teachers.

Here are some resources to learn more about the programs, including their qualifications and whether they are right for you.

MICHIGAN FUTURE EDUCATOR FELLOWSHIP

The fellowship provides education students with up to $10,000 towards their tuition each year for a maximum of three years.

 In order to qualify for these funds, you must also meet the additional requirements: 

• File the . While this is not a need-based program, the FAFSA must be submitted as part of the application process. 
• Have begun your first semester in the education program in the fall 2022 semester or after.
• Be a high school graduate.
• Be enrolled at least full-time, or at least 12 credit hours.
• Be working on your first teacher certification.
• Must have earned at least 56 semester credits.
• Have a cumulative college GPA of at least 3.0.
• You and your parent(s) must be Michigan residents since July 1 of the previous calendar year. 

If you believe that you have met all of those requirements, you may . In order to receive the funds, you are required to sign a 鈥淐ommitment to Teach Agreement,鈥� in which you are agreeing to teach in a Michigan school (public, nonpublic or public preschool) for a certain number of years. 

The agreement is as follows:

If you do not meet this service obligation requirement and/or don鈥檛 finish the teacher certification program, the fellowship converts to a 0% interest-rate loan with a repayment term of 10 years.

STUDENT TEACHING STIPEND

The stipend provides student teachers with $9,600 toward their living expenses during each student-teaching semester.

In order to qualify for these funds, you must also meet the additional requirements: 

• Be working towards initial teacher certification.
• Be participating full-time or its equivalent in required student teacher coursework.
• Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
• Be in an unpaid student teaching position in a Michigan public school district or a public school academy.
• Not received the MI Future Educator Student Teacher Stipend before, unless your program specifically requires more than one semester of student teaching.

Once you have received confirmation of your student teaching placement, you may create an account and apply for the MI Future Educator Stipend . 

If you are not a Michigan resident, you are still eligible for the student teaching stipend as long as you are student teaching in a Michigan public school.
